Weber Invitation to the (orch. Berlioz) Dance
Schumann Cello Concerto
Brahms (orch. Schoenberg) Piano Quartet in G minor
Johannes Moser, cello
Alexander Vedernikov, conductor

Weber’s Invitation to the Dance begins with quiet courtesy, but in Berlioz’s glittering orchestration whirls you off your feet. Brahms starts his Piano Quartet with three movements of mellow emotion - before suddenly cutting
loose in a wild, crazy folk-dance. Schoenberg loved this piece, and his uproariously entertaining orchestral version doesn’t stint on either colour or panache. Distinguished German cellist Johannes Moser performs Schumann’s ardent Cello Concerto.

Royal Scottish National Orchestra
Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique
Thu 21 Nov: 7.30pm

Book Tickets for this event >>>

Schreker Nachtstück from Der ferne Klang
Mozart Piano Concerto No 27 K595
Tchaikovsky Symphony No 6 Pathétique
Thomas Søndergård, conductor
Steven Osborne, piano

Pathétique means ‘full of feeling’, and no symphony wears its heart quite so passionately on its sleeve as Tchaikovsky’s Sixth, a no-holds-barred musical autobiography by a composer on the edge. Thomas Søndergård and the RSNO will go straight for the emotional jugular, but not before they’re joined by our
Artist in Residence Steven Osborne for the lovely final piano concerto by Tchaikovsky’s own favourite composer Mozart.

BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra
Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto
Fri 14 Feb 2020: 7.30pm

Book Tickets for this event >>>

Smetana Overture, The Bartered Bride
Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto
Dohnányi Symphony No 1
Gergely Madaras, conductor
Karen Gomyo, violin

Discover the world of Hungarian composer Erno von Dohnányi - the missing link between Romantic Vienna and the fiery sounds of Bartók and Kodály. His first symphony is something of a passion for our Hungarian guest conductor Gergely Madaras; and its moody fin-de-siècle atmosphere offers a lush contrast to Tchaikovsky’s sunlit Violin Concerto - a work that can’t quite decide whether to sing or to dance, and ends up doing both in the most tuneful way imaginable.

Scottish Chamber Orchestra
Beethoven Symphonies
Nos 6 ‘Pastoral’ & 7
Wed 4 Mar 2020: 7.30pm

Book Tickets for this event >>>

Beethoven Symphony No 6 ‘Pastoral’
Beethoven Symphony No 7
Maxim Emelyanychev, conductor

Beethoven was a city dweller, a superstar in Vienna – where he was often acknowledged as the greatest composer in the world. However, it was the countryside that really set his troubled soul on fire, and his Sixth Symphony is an emphatic homage to the wonder and beauty of nature. Principal Conductor Maxim Emelyanychev follows with the bacchanal of the Seventh Symphony.
The stirring melody and pulsating rhythm of its Allegretto movement – made famous in Colin Firth’s dramatic address in The King’s Speech – is closely followed by an alarmingly exuberant finale!

Royal Scottish National
Orchestra
Strauss & Mahler Four
Thu 7 May 2020: 7.30pm

Book Tickets for this event >>>

R Strauss Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks
Mozart Arias from ‘Figaro’, ‘Idomeneo’ and ‘La finta giardiniera’
Mahler Symphony No 4
Thomas Søndergård, conductor
Mari Eriksmoen, soprano

A jingle of sleigh bells and a flurry of birdsong: Mahler’s Fourth Symphony begins like Mozart and ends with a child’s idea of heaven. Thomas Søndergård kicks things off with the musical anarchy of Richard Strauss’ Till Eulenspiegel –
classical music’s ultimate prankster. And there’s a world of emotion in between, this time from Mozart himself: a glorious showcase for the
terrific Norwegian soprano Mari Eriksmoen Dedicated to The Lillie Bequest Fund in recognition of the RSNO Foundation’s generous support.
