Round Up Of The Year 2018

26 December 2018

As 2018 draws to a close we take a minute to look back over the past 12 months with admiration. A LOT can happen in a year and what a year it has been for the people of Perthshire. Here are some of our favourite snaps from the past twelve months celebrating the people, places and events that have been held in Perth.

2018 kicked off with the reopening of Perth theatre after a £16.6million refurbishment in the tail end of 2017. This meant an action packed programme of events and world class performances arrived on Perth’s doorstep with some big names including Ruby Wax and Jools Holland taking part in Perth festival of the Arts.

We celebrated the achievements of so many incredible Perthshire athlete’s including Scotland’s most decorated track and field athlete, Olympic bronze medallist Eilidh Doyle and silver medal winning swimmer Stephen Milne. Both were chosen to represent Scotland at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

The sun shone over Perth this spring with glorious sunshine and wonderful weather. With over 7000 attendees who came far and wide for Perth racecourse annual ladies day. A must do event on the Perth Social calendar where the Small City girls were on hand to dish out the rosettes for best dressed,  Grand Lady and best headwear.

The summer months brought a toe tapping musical extravaganza to Perth with festivals including BBC Big weekend, Rewind, Solas and Southern Fried. Horsecross Plaza became a hub of music and activity with locals and tourists enjoying delicious southern fried food and Americana music throughout the month of July. Small City Sam enjoyed a selfie with a Llama and two toddlers at Solas festival in Perthshire.

In the wake of the #Metoo movement and 2018 celebrating 100 years of Votes for Women, women’s rights and activism where at the forefront of this year’s WOW festival at Perth Theatre. With incredible panel discussions and performances the weekend came to an end with a passionate keynote speech from festival founder Jude Kelly.  The people of Perth celebrated Perth’s first Pride event this September. Anita our Small City reporter was there to capture the action and participate in the first Pride celebrations.

The autumn months brought the return of the Great Perthshire Picnic and Perth’s annual food festival. This year Perth’s finest chefs including Graeme Pallister, Andrew Moss, Martin Buchan and Steven Pearson joined forces for “Gourmets in the Gallery” delivering a truly unique charity event inside Perth Museum and Art Gallery. All proceeds went to two fantastic Perth charities – Giraffe Trading and Perth Autism Support.

Small City, Big Personality came out triumphant at the Association of Scottish Business women awards where Nicki was awarded “Most enterprising Business of The Year”. The team celebrated long into the night. You can read the story of how Nicki and Anna created a platform which is now loved by many and has become a go to source of what's on, chat, stories, recipes and so much more in both Perth City and wider Perthshire.

Spirits of Scone returned for its annual fright fest drawing in crowds in its thousands to the week-long event held in the palace grounds.

Winter festivities brought big name acts to Perth with James Arthur and Pixie Lott attending the annual Perth Christmas Lights switch on. Christmas markets lined Perth High street throughout December full of artisanal craft traders and delicious street food snacks.  What a fantastic way to end a brilliant 2018!
