Tom Ryan's Perth

Ace Perthshire photographer Tom Ryan has taken stunning snaps in some of the greatest places in the world, such as London, Tokyo and Kyoto.  However, his shots of our own Fair City, Perth hold their own with the very best of them!  He has a great knack of making the familiar local sights and landmarks we pass everyday look glamorous and edgy, and his rainy night shots have a big-scale cinematic look that has to be seen to be believed.

This week, camera in hand, he takes a view askew at some of Perth's best-known streets and places.  We've got neon-tinged vistas of South Street and Mill Street that look like something out of Hong Kong or Hollywood, and if you squint at his puddle pics of St John Place and The Bothy you'd swear you were in Venice.  All this, plus moody shots of Scone, and a breathtaking photo of a silhouetted Kinnoull Tower flanked by starlight above and streetlights below.

It's not all mean and moody stuff though, as Tom shows his lighter side with an exclusive pic from his photo shoot with one of Scotland's hottest supermodels... Mr Reid.  This pint-sized hottie sure knows how to work the camera.  All this and more in this week's Small City Gallery!

About The Photographer

Tom Ryan is an urban landscape photographer that first started snapping in 1977 but didn't get really serious about photography until the late 2000’s when his work took him on extended trips to the Far East: to Japan, Taiwan, Korea and China. He found himself with evenings and weekends to spare in Tokyo and Seoul and discovered that an Asian city that is a bleak, concrete wilderness by day turns into a glorious, neon-lit fantasy land at night.

On returning to Scotland he found the lights of Perth didn't quite compare with Tokyo – but then he discovered puddles! Even the smallest puddle produces a spectacular reflection when the camera is at ground level. And, unlike Tokyo, the streets and pavements of Perth are perfect for puddles.

You can check out Tom's work at his great website, including the "Puddles of Perth" section here>>
