David Douglas was born in the village of Scone in 1799 and worked as a gardener at Scone Palace for seven years. Douglas went on to become an explorer and a great plant hunter and the Douglas Fir is named after him.

Scone Palace Celebrates it's 50th Anniversary!

Scone Palace celebrates 50 years welcoming visitors through its doors. 

Nestled in the outskirts of Perth and on the banks of the silvery Tay, sits the spectacular Scone Palace. Famous for being the crowning place of Scottish Kings, this iconic landmark is also one of Scotland’s most popular visitor attractions offering a rich combination of unique, historic and cultural experiences.

This year, Scone Palace is marking a very special milestone, celebrating its 50th anniversary as one of Scotland’s favourite visitor attractions. Opening its doors for the very first time in spring 1966, Scone Palace has welcomed millions of visitors from all over the world over the last five decades.

To celebrate, Scone Palace is offering all visitors throughout 2016 the opportunity to upgrade their Palace and Grounds Entrance Ticket to a Palace and Grounds Season Ticket at no extra charge, meaning visitors can enjoy unlimited entry throughout the season, from March 25th to October 31st, 2016. All visitors have to do is fill out a short Season Ticket application form.

Steeped in history, visitors can explore over a thousand years of Scottish heritage inside the Scone Palace’s ancient walls where King Robert the Bruce and Macbeth where once crowned Kings of Scotland. Visit the Old Kitchen Coffee Shop where delicious home grown produce from the Palace’s Kitchen Garden is available for visitors to enjoy, as well as traditional freshly baked scones from Scone. Then, pick up memento, including a range of culinary produce and over 40 single malt whiskies, in the Scone Palace Gift Shop.

Outside, there are over 100 acres of spectacular grounds and world-class gardens to enjoy in the land of David Douglas, one of Scotland’s most famous plant hunters who once worked as a gardener at Scone Palace. There’s also an adventure playground for younger visitors and a star shaped maze which can be ventured into and create a challenge for all ages.

Scone Palace opens daily at 9.30am with the last admissions at 5.00pm.
