Auld Perth Bairns

The 'Auld Perth Bairns' is a corner of Facebook where locals gather to share old photographs and memories.  It's a great place to go if you're feeling nostalgic or even if you want to see what the town you live in looked like before you were born.  They also have fun polls and discussion topics like "When you went to the 'Chippy' did you get a Poke of Chips or a Bag of Chips?"

The idea for today's gallery came as a result of 'The Early Photographers of Perthshire' gallery, one we featured about a month ago.  People, myself included, seem to love pictures of Perthshire in days gone by, so we thought we would give the people what they want!

After a quick search on Facebook, I came across a wonderful old picture of South Street posted by Elaine Hynd on Auld Perth Bairns.  I contacted her to ask her permission to use it.  It turns out that her 90-year-old father, Peter White, was the photographer and he was thrilled that people would see it.  That gave me the idea to find more great vintage (that's what the kids say isn't it) pics of Perth and it's people, so I put a post on the group to see what other goodies people had!

Gallery Photographers

The Auld Bairns came up trumps with some amazing and historic pics.  Arthur Rodgie contributed black and white pictures of both himself and of his father.  We've also received a great image of Rhona Baxter's Father in uniform and Margaret McShane's Mum and Dad all dressed up in their Sunday best, plus Margaret herself on a GA night out in the 70's!

Kay Lumsden gave us a picture of an impossible shiny red bus heading to Gleneagles from Cromlix Road and Neil MacDonald had a cracking snap taken from the top of Newhouse Road, years before McDiarmid Park was even dreamt of.  We take a trip down memory lane with Moira White's image of kids heading for their first day at Craigie Primary School in 1947, and we've even got an arty black and white photoshoot from Perth band Combo Vitto.  Finally, Margaret Steel Gallatly provides us a shot of daring do and athletic prowess from a circa early 1950's Railway Athletic Club.  Thanks to all of the above for letting us use your photo's. If you like what you see then head over to the Auld Perth Bairns to see more!
