Perth Radio Taxis Food Drive

Local family-run business Perth Radio Taxis has just launched a fantastic initiative to support Perth and Kinross Foodbank this summer. Their July Food Drive will offer all customers £1 off their taxi journey fare when they give their driver a donation of food for the foodbank.

Perth and Kinross Foodbank was founded back in 2013 by local churches and community groups, working together towards stopping hunger in our area. It is part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, which aim to tackle poverty and hunger throughout the UK. The foodbank provides three days’ worth of nutritionally-balanced food to local people in crisis.

We want to bring attention to the need for donations right on our very own doorstepDonations to the foodbank can be handed to your taxi driver, or dropped in to the Perth Radio Taxis office on Scott Street in the city centre. There is no stipulation as to how big or small your donation should be. Food items must be in date and preferably from the foodbank’s most-needed list, including pasta sauces, packet pasta meals, tinned fruit, puddings, long life fruit juice, rice and jam. The foodbank cannot accept fresh or chilled food. If anybody would like to donate but can’t manage to do so in person, they can simply call Perth Radio Taxis who will arrange free collection from one of their drivers.

When Perth Radio Taxis met with the foodbank, it was a real eye-opener. The taxi firm said, “We did not realise how many people depend on this service and how much it takes to keep this project running. We want to bring attention to the need for donations right on our very own doorstep. We are also hoping to open people’s eyes to the stigma attached to using a foodbank. Most of us are only one or two missed pay cheques away from finding ourselves in a similar position.”

Anyone can end up struggling to put food on the table. Local agencies including Citizen’s Advice, social services, housing support officers and health visitors can all issue you with a foodbank voucher. It can be hard to take that first step through a foodbank’s door, but the volunteers working there aim to welcome everyone who comes to them, and will listen to your needs with compassion.

Eleanor Kelleher, project coordinator from Perth and Kinross Foodbank, said, “We are very grateful to Perth Radio Taxis for running their July Food Drive. People can also donate food to our permanent collection points in the Perth and Blairgowrie Tesco stores, and Asda, Perth. Full details are on our website.”

Perth Radio Taxis is excited to be the driving force behind this worthwhile project, and wants to encourage the people of Perth to donate whatever they can. You will enjoy a reduced-price taxi fare, and at the same time know that you are doing your bit to combat poverty and hunger in your local community.
