PKAVS Multi-Cultural Indoor Highland Games

02 December 2019

On Saturday 30th November, PKAVS Minority Communities Hub, Live Active Leisure and Perth & Kinross Council’s Gaelic Development Team joined together to bring the communities of Perth a celebration of all things St Andrew's Day.

The event, which took place at Bell’s Sports Centre, featured traditional children’s games from Scotland, Poland and Romania, as well as tug of war, caber tossing and a welly throwing competition.

During the celebrations the attendees were joined by the Kinfauns Step Dancers, who, as well as demonstrating traditional step dance, delivered tutorials to attendees, giving them the opportunity to have a go themselves.

The organisers were also delighted to welcome the Mad Ferret Band, who led attendees in a spirited live ceilidh to conclude the event.

The day was compered by Archie MacLellan, former councillor and current Vice Chair of PKAVS. Archie has long been a champion of both the Minority Communities Hub and the work of the Gaelic Development Team.

Entry to the event was free of charge thanks to the generous support of the BEMIS Fair Saturday events fund, and contributions from Live Active and PKAVS.

One event attendee said;

“My daughter actually made a calendar for this event because she was so excited; she has been crossing off the days, and it was well worth it. I can’t stress how good this kind of event is for everybody, and I’m so happy that Perth is putting this kind of thing on.”

Jenni Keenan, Team Leader at PKAVS Minority Communities Hub, said;

“We were delighted to be able to work with such great partners to deliver this event, which brought together people from varied backgrounds to celebrate St Andrew, a Saint recognised in many fascinating ways around the world. It was really lovely to see families that we work with at PKAVS celebrating alongside local families- and having such a great time, too!”
