Lunch in Perthshire

Lunch out in Perthshire can be as simple as a bowl of homemade soup, as delightful as Afternoon Tea over looking a loch and as WOW as two rosette food in an award-winning Scottish eaterie.

Long since known as Scotland's larder, Perthshire is a food lover's heaven with many of our country's top chefs and cooks working in the kitchens of our favourite cafes and restaurants. Wee hidden gems serving up soup like your granny makes sit comfortably alongside the chefs chasing AA rosettes with food as pretty as the scenery that inspired it.

The lunch spots featured here all vary greatly in what they offer but there is a strong, recurring theme running through their ethos. Think seasonal, buy local and cook with love and passion. Which means that whether it's an Afternoon Tea of dainty sandwhiches and pastries or a plate of soft, billowy Scottish scallops you will always be guaranteed quality and bags of flavour.

As well as traditional Scottish we also have traditional Indian, Chinese and Italian, all of which have been given a Scottish twist using meat from the local butcher, veggies in season in Perthshire and fish pulled from the waters around Scotland.

If you live local to Perthshire, then why not get out and explore the foodie scene a little further? For visitors, I'd recommend an extra few days to do justice to all that's on offer!

A day trip into Perth City Centre will bring you treats such as The Postbox Restaurant, 63 Tay Street, The Parklands Hotel (with parking!), Tabla Restaurant and The Jade Garden.

Or make a day of it and tie a genuine foodie treat in with a visit to one of Perthshire's favourite attractions. Wilde Thyme at The Famous Grouse Experience in Crieff is a hot favourite with us. Copper Beech Cafe at The Blackwatch Castle and Museum is well worth a wander along the North Inch from Perth city centre and if lunch and an exhibition is your thing, then look no further Glassrooms Cafe in Horsecross's Threshold space.

Is a Garden Centre a vistor attraction? It is between April and May when you can spend a gorgeous few hours enjoying the beautiful gardens at Glendoick, the home of world-class plant hunter and garden expert, Ken Cox.

Of course, as well as great food Perthshire is known for great golf and both Craigie Hill and Murrayshall will offer you a filling lunch after a round in the fresh air and glorious scenery of Perthshire. (Although it has to be said that we often go straight to scran!)

If it's scenery you're after then we will leave you thinking about Afternoon Tea in Fonab Castle at Pitlochry; overlooking the stunning views of Loch Faskally and the landscapes of Highland Perthshire this has a WOW factor all of its own.

We are more than happy to recommend all of these chefs, cafes and restaurants and as a group, the Small City team feel extremely fortunate to have scoffed down many a lunch, dinner and snack in these fine establishments.

All in the name of research and reporting you understand!

This month we're offering you the chance to win lunch out in Perthshire for a year and are feeling very smug at having pulled together an impressive list of Perthshire's finest venues.
