January Tones in Perthshire

16 January 2016

When I interviewed our resident food photographer, Gill Murray, for her Big Personality spot, she told me about a shocking term for female photographers who start a little later in life: Digital Dollies.

Never one to harbour a negative stereotype, we thought it time to showcase the talents of a group of female photographers who are making a BIG impact in the Instragram world.

And as you can see from these stunning photographs of Perthshire in January, there is nothing dolly-like about any of these gifted women. A beautiful interpretation of our countryside and wildlife: we're proud here at Small City to collectively showcase their wonderful work.

@berriestagram

About two years ago I decided I wanted to explore more of Scotland and started an Instagram account to share my journey discovering this enchanting land.  To me photography is not just about capturing moments, it’s also about capturing emotions and telling stories.  Anyone who follows me on instagram can see through my photos how much this beautiful country has inspired me.

@kristyashton

I have always had a love of the outdoors and being close to nature ever since I was a little girl living in the Australian outback.  After upgrading to an IPhone6 last year I started trying to capture this passion along with educating my children of the simple beauty around them.  Now with a ‘real camera’ in hand, and an ever-increasing desire to ‘chase that sunset’, I can’t stop exploring!  Scotland is a beautiful place and a photographer's dream.

@little.scottish.one

I have lived in Edinburgh, Dundee and Glasgow so I guess you’d call me a city girl but since my Mum moved to the outskirts of Aberfeldy, Perthshire has stolen my heart! It offers so much, with plenty of places to explore, where no walk or cycle is ever the same no matter how many times you do it. I am an ‘iPhone only’ type of photographer and I use Instagram as my visual journal. I really love taking and editing photos and I am grateful Instagram gives me a platform to share the things I love with other people.

@bumblebambi

Being born and raised in Shetland meant I was always given the freedom of being outdoors and being able to explore wherever I want, and it's something that has stuck with me as I've grown up.  I'm an avid munro bagger and island hopper which means I get to explore many amazing places in Scotland and I always having my iPhone in hand means I'm able to capture some breathtaking scenes.  Scotland really is a stunning country and can't wait to explore it and Perthshire more in the coming years.

@Bean_Nighe

My name's Sam, short for Samantha. I'm a wife to Alex and a mummy to a couple of humans and an adorable Westie called Casper.  I'm an Edinburgher and have lived and worked in the city my entire life. I love to travel and in particular explore my beautiful country - Scotland. I adore the great outdoors and am happiest when surrounded by lochs, moorland and mountains. Nothing beats standing on a mountain top taking in the views stretching out below.

The reality is usually standing on a mountain top immersed in thick cloud!  I'm passionate about the history, language, literature, myths and customs of Scotland.  I studied History at The University of Edinburgh which included some Scots literature.   I'm an avid hobby snapper and I'm never without my trusty iPhone 6s or my Canon EOS 100d.  Snapping gives me an artistic outlet that I can indulge quickly and easily and it allows me to share my passion for Scotland. My Instagram name @bean_nighe is from Celtic mythology. She's a Scottish banshee and harbinger of death.  Thankfully I'm neither.

@hannahketts

I've lived in Perth for most of my life but it's only recently, after seeing other places in the world and then coming home, that I realised how beautiful this part of the world is to live in.  My sister Rachel was the main reason I became interested in taking photos, partly because I've always loved her pictures of Scotland, and partly because it was her camera I would nick before I got my own. So now I like to wander, and take photos of anything and everything I see!

@technoalli123

I have lived in Perthshire for the past 8 years. I love photography, all aspects, landscape, sunsets, sunrises.nature. I am open to new challenges and photography has plenty of them. Social Media has certainly played a large part over the last three years. there are some great pics, and it makes you want to see these places. which must be a good thing.

@fi.austin

I’m at my happiest when I’m outside and if I can get up high, then all the better. Being able to record the amazing views Scotland offers and share them on Instagram has led to fantastic friendships, both in the virtual world and also in reality when folk have come to check out these beautiful Scottish landscapes. I use both my iPhone 5s and a “real” camera, although I find its way harder getting the real camera to do what I want. All part of the challenge! I love the soft light that Scotland has…showing off the fabulous colours that define Scotland.

@vab4eva

I’ve been interested in taking photographs for as long as I can remember but I took hundreds of rubbish photos and became disheartened with it all. Then came the invention of digital photography and the smart phone. All the photos on my instagram feed are taken on my constant companion, a Samsung smart phone.

I take pictures of anything and everything the countryside, close ups, portraits  if it ‘jumps out’ at me I take a snap of it.  I also take many pictures while I’m out running, I’m so lucky having such amazing countryside on my doorstep to go out and explore. I also use my instagram feed to chronical the 2 year long running challenge that I set myself back in January 2015  #104weeksofrunday (including #52weeksofrunday).
