As an animal lover I’m always following dog related stuff on Facebook; after all research has shown that looking at cute puppy pictures can instantly put you in a better mood! I don’t have a dog of my own now, but I grew up with dogs in the house - a mongrel, Lhasa Apso and a Labrador – and I often babysit my sisters’ dogs giving me part-ownership of a Chihuahua, a Pug and a Cockapoo.
Following a recent trawl through my newsfeed looking for places I could take my canine brood, I came across the fabulous Dog Friendly Perthshire.
For those that don’t know about it, Dog Friendly Perthshire is a fantastic Facebook page, listing shops, hotels and pubs that love to welcome dogs right here in Perthshire. There are also some fab tips on walks and links to items on micro-chipping, pet insurance and other doggy related needs.
As I’ve already mentioned, I love having the company of a dog and I immediately started planning all the great walks and places that I could take my wee pooches the next time I have them. Inspired by how caring the person running the page appears, I thought I’d find out more about the ideas behind it and have a good old chat with a fellow doggie lover at the same time!
The lovely Katie is the woman behind Dog Friendly Perthshire and many of you may know her other page, Missing Pets Perth and Kinross Scotland. This page was set up solely to allow people to put up information about their missing pet. It has been a fantastic service for the pet owners of Perth and Kinross and with over 7,000 likes it has helped spread the word about loads of missing pets and animals from dogs and cats to budgies and tortoises! It's heart-warming to see how many people share Katie’s posts; as any animal lover will know, pets become a fully signed up member of your family and losing them would be devastating for everyone. She, and every one who likes her page, have helped to reunite so many Perthshire pets with their families.
It was while managing this page that Katie decided to branch out. She was constantly being asked advice on the best places to take dogs for walks, overnight stays and places where owners could sit and have lunch and a drink without worrying about leaving the dog in the car. Enter the Dog Friendly Perthshire page!
Katie visits lots of dog friendly places throughout Perthshire with her super cute and friendly Lhasa Apso ‘Baxter’ and then very helpfully gives her feedback right there on Facebook. Baxter loves going on a long walk before curling up for a rest in a local pub or restaurant allowing Katie to enjoy a cuppa or a bite to eat. She tells me that Baxter can also be spoiled with doggie treats by the staff in the places that she visits, so he definitely doesn’t get left out!
Talking about being left out, Baxter doesn’t miss much! He was recently part of Katie and her partner’s romantic engagement on a glorious, scenic walk through Birnam. After the proposal they all headed to the Taybank Bar to celebrate! Unsurprisingly, she and her Husband-To-Be are currently looking at dog friendly wedding venues so stay tuned… Baxter is about to be the cutest ring bearer ever!
Katie is a true animal lover and all of this is done free of charge and with a big dollop of doggy love! She has great information and is super knowledgeable; I can’t recommend her page highly enough for ideas on where to go with your dogs for a day out, lazy Sunday stroll or local weekend away.
Many thanks to Baxter for posing in all these fab Dog Friendly places. He can be seen in The Boat House Restaurant in Loch Leven, The Taybank in Dunkeld, Alan's Pet Shop in Perth and the Meeting Place in Dunkeld.
