Desmond Comes to Perth!

Storm Desmond crashed his way through Perthshire last weekend and left a trail of flooding and road closures in his wake.

In the two decades since Perth's flood defences were put into place never has the silvery Tay had my old North Muirton stomping ground quite so nervous! I remember vividly the devastation of 1993 and my poor Mum running upstairs with her favourite cushions and photos.  She still lives in Lewis Place and, like many others, we were on tenterhooks all weekend.

On Saturday 5th December 2016, Ian from PK Perspectives parked up alongside the South Inch and took a walk over the railway bridge and along the left bank of the Tay.  There were overturned sheds visible on the allotments of Moncrieffe Island - not that they could be rescued as the island was submerged!

All of the daytime shots you see here were taken between 1pm and 3pm, eight hours before high tide, and as you can see, the water was already frighteningly high.

The night time shots were taken at around 11pm when high tide was due and by this stage the Queen's Bridge was closed and there were huge numbers of bystanders hanging around to see what was going on.

A tense and eventful weekend, we were all glad when Desmond decided to move on!
