JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Family Support and School Liaison Co-ordinator (MATERNITY LEAVE)

(Fixed term contract for 12 months to cover maternity leave)

REPORTS TO: Family and Transitions Service Manager

HOURS: 28 hours (4 days) per week (hours to be agreed, but some flexibility is required to work with families need). Hours will roughly be allocated as 14 hours for school liaison and 14 hours for family support.

Pay: £10.50 per hour

JOB PURPOSE:                   

The Family Support and School Liaison Co-ordinator role will support all new families accessing Perth Autism Support to allow every parent with a child with ASD to access the right support at a time that is right for their family, including the delivery of relevant training.  The post holder will be a direct link between schools and Perth Autism Support and can provide advice and information to parents and professionals about how best to support a child or young person with ASD in an education context.

MAIN DUTIES AND TASKS

Families

To meet the needs of the families by:

  • Introducing and discussing all Perth Autism Support services to new families registering with PAS and supporting where needed to access different areas of service.
  • Managing caseload independently to ensure families are getting the most out of the service
  • Ensure that the families have access to appropriate services within PAS and other external services
  • Identify, plan and deliver specific training to help build the knowledge and skills of the families who access the service.
  • Have a good knowledge of services offered by PAS, statutory and other voluntary services that families could access as close multi agency working will be necessary.
  • To be able to identify the needs of the family and develop and deliver a family support plan in order to enhance the family’s ability to cope.

Schools

To meet the needs of schools within Perth & Kinross:

  • Create and run activities for children during unstructured times of the day
  • Be the representative of Perth Autism Support at any appropriate school meetings
  • Support any new initiatives in schools which will support children i.e. Lego Therapy/Relax Kids/Emotional Regulation Strategies
  • Build relationships with key staff and community link workers within schools
  • Promote the work of Perth Autism Support within the school environment
  • Work alongside Autism Outreach Teachers as appropriate
  • Deliver Autism Awareness Talks in schools to develop peer understanding
  • Additional transition support
  • Facilitate autism training and problem solving groups for school staff
  • Support secondary aged children with Youth and Philanthropy Initiative Projects

Multi-agency

To promote and develop Perth Autism Support Family Support service by:

  • Promoting the service at all times.
  • Working with multiple agencies across different sectors in order to establish good working relationships.
  • Attend scheduled and ad-hoc client reviews with referral agent personnel as requested and/or provide written report in advance of review.
  • Report, record and action all concerns with regards to the clients to relevant personnel and update client files.
  • Report, record and action all complaints and adverse incidents.

Recording and Reporting

  • Complete monthly reports/stats and deliver to Family and Transitions Service Manager.
  • Maintaining a database of client and volunteer information in line with standards
  • Update staff team at staff meetings
  • Complete an evaluation report of the service area as requested.
  • Raising awareness and profile of the Perth Autism Support and specifically the Family Support and School Liaison Service.
  • Be responsible for the completion of good quality computer and written records; in line with company policies and procedures

General Responsibilities

Other duties:

  • Ensure safety of both clients and volunteers complies with policy.
  • Promote effective communication.
  • Help out in other areas where appropriate and as instructed by the Senior Management Team.

Personal Development

  • Maintain professional knowledge and competence on both company policies and regulatory standards
  • Attend training courses and updates as deemed necessary

Awareness of the needs of people with autism and how this can impact on individuals, their families and their education environment.

Qualifications in ASD

 

Strong evidence based practice.

 

Experience of setting up ASD services and evaluating the effectiveness of a service.

Awareness of how ASD affects families

Experience or understanding of dealing with parents/caregivers of children and young people.

 

Empathic approach to families and an understanding of some of the stressors that having a child with an additional support need can put on a family.

 

Have experience of setting aims and objectives with families/professionals.

 

Being able to evaluate outcomes of input delivered.

Experience in dealing with parents/care givers of children and young people with ASD.

 

Empathic approach to families and an understanding of some of the stressors that having a child with ASD can put on a family.

 

Experience of working in an education context.

 

Training

Experience of delivering training to parents or professionals.

Experience in delivering training on a variety of different topics relating to ASD.

 

Experience of writing, delivering and evaluating training relating to ASD.

Multi Agency work

An awareness of which external agencies can be involved in supporting children and young people with ASD.

 

Being able to communicate in an open way in order to develop and maintain multi-agency links.

 

Experience of working with professionals from different agencies, while keeping the family and young person at the centre in line with GIRFEC policy.

 

Car Driver

A current UK driving licence and their own car.

This post requires the holder to be available at varying times as required by the post to carry out other duties and responsibilities commensurate with the post and the needs of the organisation in order to develop and maintain service delivery.
