Three Little Pigs- part of Perth Festival of The Arts

By 27th May 2016

Earlier this week our family (including 15 month old Betsy & 3 year old Bobby) joined Children’s Classic Concerts’ production of The Three Little Pigs as part of the Perth Festival of The Arts which continues until Sunday 29th May. Madcap presenters Owen and Olly and their mini orchestra put on a fun-filled hour of musical storytelling, well-known tunes and lots of joining in at perth Concert Hall.

The show, featuring The Three Little Pigs from Revolting Rhymes, celebrated Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday and brought alive some of his most well know characters through classic concert pieces, funny costumes and brilliant storytelling. From the beginning it was apparent we were in for a fun event when we saw that the members of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra were in Roald Dahl themed fancy dress. The Orchestra had taken on characters including Oompa Loompas, The BFG, Miss Trunchbull, a ladybird, and a crocodile to name just a few!Three Little Pigs orchestra

Introducing each piece of music, playing percussion and narrating were the very energetic Owen Gunnell and Oliver Cox – the artistic directors - suitably dressed up of course!  They were brilliant; keeping the whole show moving and the giggles flowing with their ace character voices and zany presenting pitched perfectly for the age group.  There was lots of actively encouraging audience participation too with even the shiest kids (and parents) coming out there shells for a spot of dancing!Three Little Pigs rehearsal

There was non-stop nonsense from Owen and Olly throughout as they narrated the tale of the Three Little Pigs, whilst the characters on stage acted it out, often running through the audience to the delight of all.  Even the Wolf got a cheer!  The action included some lovely pieces of music like the well-known melody from the ballet Coppélia and Dance Macabre (Saint-Saëns), showcasing the ‘witch’ of the orchestra (leader Jane Mackenzie) on her spookily de-tuned violin. Our little one especially enjoyed Tchaikovsky’s Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, inspired by Willy Wonka’s sweet tooth (it was also an excuse for Owen & Olly to wear their tutus, as they like to do apparently!

The presenters took time to introduce each instrument and orchestra member which added an extra depth to all the fun.  The intention behind the concert was to celebrate Roald Dahl’s Centenary year, so there was a rendition of happy birthday that the audience helped with as well as a massive party game of musical statues.

Three Little Pigs BFGOwen & Olly were keen to demonstrate some proper ‘Dad dancing’ in their words, as well as getting us all  snapping like the Enormous Crocodile and busting some Oompa Loompa moves.  Everyone seemed to enjoy getting up on their feet and it was a wonderful way to spend a Saturday morning…not to mention a fantastic way of introducing all children to classical music!

It really was a family affair and we were pleased to see the wide age range amongst the audience was well catered for. We all had so much fun! We'll definitely be looking out for the next Children’s Classic Concert adventure.
