Perth Concert Hall is Ten Years Young This September

By 18th August 2015

Can you believe it? It’s been ten years since the concert hall first opened in Perth and since then we’ve had a whole decade of amazing live music, workshops, comedy, musical shows and so much more. Kids have collected hard earned awards at School Prize Givings, Southern Fried Festival and Horsecross Voices were born here and children as young as two have wandered through the doors, bursting with anticipation at the thought of a talking dog or singing kettle!

The artsy folks amongst us call it "adventurous programming and innovative join-in events"; the layman just loves it for the sheer joy of being entertained.

Horsecross VoicesTen years on, this great venue is one that the people of Perth are rightly proud of and to celebrate, Horsecross Arts, the people behind Perth Concert Hall and Perth Theatre are throwing a party over two special weekends of community activities and concerts.

On Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September, professional artists and performers will be running free drop-in workshops including aerial dance, collage, drama, singing and graffiti. Back stage and artspace tours will be available and there will be many free performances from local groups including Blow and Blast and local choirs taking place over the weekend.

The Horsecross Hoolie on Saturday 12 September is an opportunity for all the family to take the floor and whirl around the auditorium in a fast and furious ceilidh! Singing Sunday will give everyone a chance to sing their hearts out as well as enjoy free concerts including Horsecross Voices Does Musicals with the RSNO.

On Friday 18 September, Perth Concert Hall favourite; award-winning trumpeter Alison Balsom is joined by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra for a programme featuring Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto, Sibelius’ Finlandia and Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony. Then on Saturday 19 September Perth Chamber Music presents the Scottish Saxophone Ensemble in a free concert in the afternoon.

In the evening of Saturday 19 September, Horsecross Arts are presenting a specially commissioned show called 'Made in Perthshire' which is musically directed by Ross Ainslie and Patsy Reid. Two of Scotland’s finest young composers and players, they will be joined by two more local artists, songwriters Fraser Anderson and Lisa Rigby. They will be accompanied by a top-class backing band featuring the cream of the Scottish folk scene for a unique and unforgettable night of songs and tunes old and new.

Gwilym Gibbons, chief executive of Horsecross Arts said:

“In the ten years since it opened Perth Concert Hall has shaken up the cultural map of Scotland. It has become the new go-to venue for a host of world-class artists from across all genres, gained a reputation for adventurous programming, innovative community events and imaginative activities, welcomed tens of thousands of conference delegates and picked up more than thirty awards. It has helped shine the spotlight on Perth as a great place to live, work, invest in and visit.

HORSECROSS LOGONone of this would have been possible without our supporters, funders, sponsors and visitors and above all our audiences. The people of Perthshire and beyond have turned up rain or shine, taken chances, joined in with enthusiasm, roared with laughter, filled with emotion; let us entertain, move and inspire them while all the time giving us great and honest feedback allowing us to continue to improve on what we have built together.

Our 10th Anniversary celebrations are an opportunity for us all to join forces to celebrate what we have achieved. We look forward to creating many more special memories for years to come.”

Pass me my party shoes, we couldn’t agree more!
