Mozart String Quintet No 4 in G minor K516
Brahms String Quintet No 2 in G major Op 111
Mozart wrote very little music in G minor and reserved it for his most emotionally searing work. This quintet has at its heart a slow movement of unparalleled pathos. Brahms’s late chamber music has a feeling of content at a life well-led combined with a sublime yearning.
Sun 28 Feb: 3pm
Mozart Sonata in A minor K310
Janaček Sonata, ‘1 October 1905’
D. Scarlatti Five Sonatas
Scriabin Sonata No 5
Alasdair Beatson is developing a wonderful series of beautifully planned programmes. Here Mozart’s grief-stricken but controlled classicism is contrasted with the quirky brilliance of Domenico Scarlatti’s sonatas, and Janaček’s austere expressionism counterbalances the hedonistic luxury of Scriabin’s intoxicating harmonies.
Mon 7 Mar: 1pm
Ravel Piano Trio
Takemitsu Between Tides
Debussy (arr. Beamish) La Mer
Wonderful melodies and romanticism on a symphonic scale are at the core of Ravel’s fabulous Piano Trio. The concert also includes Sally Beamish’s audacious reworking for piano trio of Debussy’s majestic La Mer.
Mon 18 Apr: 1pm
Suite No 3 in C major BWV 1009
Suite No 4 in E flat major BWV 1010
Jonathan Manson, cello
John Butt, speaker
Jonathan Manson’s solo playing has lit up the Dunedin Consort’s performances of the Bach Passions. Here he plays two of Bach’s great cello suites and, as a bonus, discusses with John Butt whether these suites may, in fact, have been written by Bach’s wife, Anna Magdalena!
Mon 16 May: 1pm
Smetana Three Polkas
Chopin Ballade No 3
Rachmaninov Variations on a Theme of Chopin Op 22
Alisdair Hogarth, piano
A programme of unashamed romanticism and virtuosity! Rachmaninov’s homage to the great pianist- composer Chopin concludes a programme which opens with Smetana’s characterful Polkas and also includes Chopin’s own third Ballade.
