We’ve been behind the scenes with Allan’s Chilli Products to find out how they make their delicious jellies and sauces. They produce their wonderful products from the kitchen in their family home, and Allan is helped by his wife, Joan, and his mother-in-law, Betty.
The fruits used in their jellies and sauces are locally sourced – either picked by themselves or from Martin’s Fruit Bazaar – and the chillies are imported. Allan mixes the chilli with a host of fantastic ingredients to come up with his recipes, which has seen his products nominated for the Great British Food Award and the Great Taste Award 2016 and 2017.
It’s a lengthy process and the kitchen is a hub of activity, with Joan and Betty chopping chillies and other ingredients and cooking them on the stove and producing a wonderful sweet aroma tinged with a bit of spice.
Allan’s Chilli Products are available to buy online, or you can pick them up in some local shops in Perth. You’ll find the jellies and sauces stocked in George Campbell’s, Provender Brown, Martin’s Fruit Bazaar, Gloagburn and Loch Leven’s Larder to name but a few – and you’ll often find Allan or his daughter at a stall at markets and shows up and down the country.
Having tried his range, they are all absolutely delicious and can be enjoyed on so many dishes, or simply on some bread or toast! My personal favourite is the Chilli Devil Sauce – which was one of the products that won a Great Taste Award.
Allan is a joiner by trade and still works with GS Brown Construction while running Allan’s Chilli Products on the side. He stumbled upon his jelly and sauce making talents purely by accident, but we’re glad he did because we absolutely love them!
