Steve's Breakfast Booster

Happy New Year! It’s time for me to put away that chocolate now and start the new year with a new start. To get me motivated I decided to call upon Steve Bonthrone, Personal Trainer for some heathly eating tips and ideas.

This smoothie recipe is one of Steve’s and I made it for breakfast this morning and it kept me feeling full until well into lunchtime.  I hear some of you gasp at the thought of downing raw spinach and kale but let me tell you, with the banana thrown in for that little bit sweetness this was actually good.  You can obviously add in other ingredients should you want to, for example a bit of ginger to give a bit of zing.

As Steve explained, “This smoothie is rich in many vitamins and minerals. It will boost your immune system, essential just now to fight colds, is high in Potassium (helps blood pressure, kidney function and a natural electrolyte), Magnesium (helps improve sleep, relaxes the nervous system, helps reduce muscle cramps and prevent lactic acid from building up after exercise).  Although the smoothie looks like liquidized Kermit the Frog, it taste of banana”.

Great sense of humour Steve – and with all those benefits I’ll definitely be  sticking to smoothies more often as my start to the day now.

Our first recipe of the New Year had to bring the healthy smoothie to the table!

So, I was one of those people who thought kale and spinach had no place in a smoothie. Soup, is where you put these power packing green veggies. However, it turns out that when you mix them like this all you really taste is the smooth delicious banana flavour!

I really try to avoid using words like 'superfood' because in my mind they arein serious danger of becoming 'awesome'! So overused they completley lose their meaning. But there really is no other word to describe this fabulous dark gree, curly leaved vegetable.

A portion of kale has an amazing array of nutrients and is an excellent source of vitamins K and A and gram for gram contains more vitamin C than carrots! It also has useful amounts of manganese, copper and phytochemicals, which are currently believed to help comabt certain types of cancer. Calcium and folate top the list for the best kidn of healthy eating!
