Horsecross Arts presents a selection World-class acoustic music inspired by Scottish traditions

Skerryvore- 8th September Breabach/Kris Drever

Skerryvore entered 2017 having, once again, been recognised as the Live Act of the Year 2016 at the MG Alba Scottish Traditional Music Awards, an award they previously won in 2011.  Since their amped-up ceilidh-band beginnings on the isle of Tiree, Skerryvore's buoyant, tautly crafted folk-rock sound has conquered the world from Chicago to Shanghai.

Breabach/Kris Drever - 21st October

Breabach unite the huge talents of Calum MacCrimmon (pipes/whistles/bouzouki), Ewan Robertson (guitar/vocals), James Mackenzie (pipes/flute/whistles), Megan Henderson (fiddle/ vocals/stepdance) and James Lindsay (double bass)and since launching their career in 2005, Breabach's star has been steeply on the rise and they are now firmly established as Scotland's leading folk band.

To simply call Kris Drever "a folksinger" would be like saying that LAU, the acclaimed band in which he also sings and plays, is "a Scottish folk trio" Both true descriptions but reductive ones that only hint at the progressive joys contained in the music of each. His latest album If Wishes Were Horses marks ten years as a solo artist and is a collection of semi-biographical songs covering the universal, and not so universal, themes of education, politics, sex, love, ennui, self-employment, social migration and Shetland.

Julie Fowlis + Session A9- 24th November

Julie Fowlis' exquisite voice, her interpretation of Scottish Gaelic culture and ability to bring folk music out of the past and into something contemporary, dynamic and irresistible, are what have made her a genuine and multi-award winning crossover star.  She has performed at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony and sung the theme song to Disney Pixar's worldwide smash animated film, Brave.

Also, Session A9 make a very welcome return to the scene of many previous triumphs. The finest of all our fiddle bands, Session A9 are Charlie McKerron, Adam Sutherland, Kevin Henderson, Gordon Gunn (fiddles), David 'Chimp' Robertson (percussion), Marc Clement (guitar) and Brian MacAlpine (keyboards) and are a genuinely thrilling live act.
