BBC Scotland on the look-out for Perth foodies

It is said that food nourishes the soul, and really, who can disagree with this? The aroma of chilli and warming spices simmering on the stove evokes memories of safe winter nights huddled under blankets; while the tang of lime and mint on your tongue can instantly transport you to languid summer days sipping mojitos in the sun.

Food can embody a place, it can comfort you, it can create and strengthen bonds as you share a meal with loved ones and cook for one another. This is the ethos behind a new programme being launched on BBC Radio Scotland, called ‘Street Feast’.

A celebration of home-cooking and community life, in each of the six planned episodes a new area of Scotland is visited, where a group of people will gather to speak about their neighbourhood over a communal meal. Each person will be invited to prepare a different dish to share at the gathering.

In an increasingly isolating society, we aim to provide new opportunities for neighbours to build relationships through food.

Acknowledging the Small City’s well-deserved reputation of being a foodie haven, the BBC are looking for interested people from Perth to take part! You don’t need to be a culinary whizz either – this programme isn’t a competition where the quality of the food is judged, but an opportunity to reflect on the food ties that bond us.

You just need to care about the community around you, and have a keenness to get to know your neighbours more. “In an increasingly isolating society, we aim to provide new opportunities for neighbours to build relationships through food”, a representative for the programme told us.

The programme will be presented by Perthshire’s own Flora Shedden – past GBBO contestant and owner of Aran Bakery – and food innovator Simon Preston – who will also be returning to Perth’s Cake Fest this November.

The deadline for registering interest in being a participant is 30th November 2018. All 6 episodes will be pre-recorded before the Christmas holidays, and then broadcast from the 29th November to the 3rdJanuary.
